An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Window Card Movie Poster (WC; measures 14" x 21 1/4" [36 x 54 cm]) (Learn More) Singin' in the Rain, the classic 1952 Stanley Donen & Gene Kelly romantic musical comedy (considered by most the best musical of all time!; "What a glorious feeling"; "MGM's Technicolor Musical Treasure!"; "Suggested by the song 'Singin' In the Rain'"; about a Hollywood movie studio in the late 1920s that wants to begin making sound pictures, but their top leading lady has a dreadful voice, plus they have great difficulties adapting to the sound equipment; pretty young Debbie Reynolds comes along to dub in the singing voice of the primadonna leading lady, played to perfection by Jean Hagen) starring Gene Kelly (as Don Lockwood), Donald O'Connor (as Cosmo Brown), Debbie Reynolds (as Kathy Selden), Jean Hagen (nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film; as Lina Lamont), Millard Mitchell (as R.F. Simpson), and Cyd Charisse (unnamed, only referred to as "Dancer"). Note that this greatest of all Hollywood musicals had an odd beginning! The title song had been sung in "The Hollywood Revue of 1929" by Cliff Edwards, and that inspired this movie, and in addition, the song "Make 'Em Laugh" was basically plagiarized from "Be a Clown", from "The Pirate"! Whoever owned the window card apparently took it to a restorer and said that they wanted it linenbacked, and not paperbacked. In the past, when I have seen linenbacked window cards, they have simply backed the entire card, which doesn't make much sense. But in this case, it appears that the restorer removed the top layer from the window card (which is what has the image, and is exactly what is done with a paperbacked poster) and then mounted it to linen as they would a one-sheet! I have never seen this done before, but it seems to have worked out well. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The top layer of the window card (the part with the image) was removed from its backing and linenbacked . Prior to that, it had some faint dot water stains scattered throughout and some tiny tears in the borders. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was well backed, and it displays great (you really can't see any evidence of the faint dot water stains at all), except that someone apparently trimmed off the top edge of the linen, which also trimmed off approximately 3/4" of the top blank border of the poster! No doubt this was done so it could fit in a frame, and the image area of the poster was not affected. Learn More about condition grades
