An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Single-Sided One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 28 1/2" x 40 3/4" [72 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Schindler's List, the classic 1993 Steven Spielberg (winner of the Best Director Academy Award for this film) World War II (WWII) Nazi Germany military concentration camp persecution-of-Jews melodrama ("Whoever Saves One Life, Saves the World Entire."; "Based on the novel by Thomas Keneally"; winner of the Best Picture Academy Award; screenwriter Steve Zaillian did a wonderful job adapting and expanding Thomas Keneally's superb book, and the movie is a triumph on all levels with wonderful writing, acting, and direction) starring Liam Neeson (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; in the title role as Oskar Schindler), Ben Kingsley, Ralph Fiennes (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), Caroline Goodall, Jonathan Sagalle, and Embeth Davidtz NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Saul Bass Important Added Info: Note that this poster features artwork by Saul Bass, and is a printer's test (see far below for what that means)! Bass submitted this design but it was not chosen for the movie. However, some one-sheets were printed with this art (no doubt to get the opinion of executives and others connected to the movie), and a few of those survive. Please bid knowing that this poster is a rare unreleased poster! The poster certainly has a magnificent image, and one wonders why the studio executives did not choose to use it for the release of the movie! It will display wonderfully on the new owner's wall. Note that we have auctioned several of the non-printer's test versions of this poster, but because they have all been unfolded and mostly in excellent condition, it is really difficult to know when we are re-auctioning a poster, and when it is one we have not auctioned before. But it is a certainty that a tiny number of these posters were printed compared to the ones that were printed for use in theaters, and they are surely many times more rare than the ones used in theaters. However, this is the very first time we have ever auctioned a printer's test version of this poster, and we don't know that we will ever auction another, making it far more rare than the already rare non-printer's test version! Also note that this is a very rare uncut printer's test poster (often referred to as a "printer's proof")! Before a poster was printed in large quantities, the printer would print a limited number of posters as "test" posters. Because they needed to be shown to people at the studio, people in the art department, the stars, etc, they would print a number of test posters and distribute them to these people. Some of them would be fully trimmed, but often they would leave the color chart on the left edge of many of the posters, which added an extra inch to the width of the poster (which explains why the poster measures 28 1/2" x 40 3/4" [72 x 104 cm]). Once these printer's test posters were shown to the various people in a position to "OK" them, the printer would print the full print run of the posters, but in this case, the poster ended up not being used, so the only examples of this poster are ones from the initial test run (and apparently almost all of those had the color chart trimmed off). What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster was never folded. It had an 8" tear in the top center, going down the right of the "S" of "STEVEN" and continuing at a slight diagonal into the image. There were a few small tears or creases near it within the image. The poster also had small creases and scuffs scattered down the center within the image. It also had many scattered in the left and right background areas. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer who backed this poster put restoration paint over many parts of the left and right background areas to make the creases and scuffs less noticeable, and they definitely accomplished this, but bear in mind the restoration this very rare poster has had before bidding on it.
