He was a major leading actor in the 1920s and 1930s, but he is not well remembered today, except by major film buffs. He played Sherlock Holmes in two movies in the early 1930s, long before Basil Rathbone assumed the part. Some of his other movies include: Shanghai Express, The Four Feathers, and Barbed Wire. He passed away in 1974 at the age of 87. Important Added Info: Note that this still has a stamp on the back that reads "JAMES CARD COLLECTION". James Card was a film preservationist who, starting in 1948, worked at the newly created George Eastman House in Rochester, New York, and he helped build their massive motion picture collection, preserving movies that had been forgotten at that time. In 1955, he discovered that Louise Brooks was living as a recluse in New York City, and he persuaded her to move to Rochester, where she wrote many letters and some books about her legendary career! Note that this still measures 11" x 14 1/4" [28 x 36 cm]. Also note that this is a deluxe still printed on double weight paper stock and it has an embossed photographer's stamp in one of the bottom corners. Condition: very good.
