An Original 1942 (from the continuous release of this movie) Vintage Theatrical Movie Pressbook (pb; measures 11" x 17 1/4" [28 x 44 cm]; 36 pages) (Learn More)

Walt Disney's Fantasia, the classic 1940 James Algar & Samuel Armstrong Walt Disney animated animation cartoon musical fantasy ("Walt Disney's Technicolor Feature Triumph") featuring Mickey Mouse and other cartoon characters created specifically for this feature movie, set to the music of classical composers including Leopold Stokowski, and Beethoven. Note that Fantasia had a very limited roadshow release which took place in several theaters with special audio equipment installed for the "Fantasound" system. This release started in late 1940 and continued into 1941, and these theaters often used home-made displays for the film. Throughout 1941, RKO negotiated with Disney to make a much shorter version of the movie in mono which could be shown in theaters without the need for special equipment. Disney finally agreed, and let RKO create a heavily edited version (he refused to edit it himself) which was released in early January of 1942. Regular posters were printed with a 1941 NSS number (it's not uncommon for films that are released near the start of a year to have a NSS from the previous year), and that is when the film had its first general release. So almost ALL of the known "first release" posters are from the 1942 continuous first release (with 1941 NSS numbers). The only pre-1942 advertising that we have seen are window cards, 8x10 stills and heralds from the theaters with the special "Fantasound" equipment.

Important Added Info: Note that this pressbook is dated 1942, but this 1940 movie played in limited release for the first year, and was almost surely still in first release in 1942, so technically, this is not a "reissue", so we are saying this is from 1942, but NOT a "reissue" for that reason, even though it is two years later. Something that is REALLY bizarre is that not only have we never auctioned a 1940 Fantasia pressbook, but we have NEVER auctioned ANY pressbook from ANY release of Fantasia, until we were consigned this one from 1942! So we imagine there was a 1940 pressbook, but maybe not, because it only had a limited release in a small number of theaters, and they might not have wanted to make posters for that small number. Plus, this 1942 pressbook has all the posters that we (and everyone else) have always thought are from 1940, so we wonder if some or all of the "1940" posters are actually from 1942! If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Note that this pressbook (along with 14 others) comes from the remarkable collection described below. The 15 pressbooks include ones from both Disney shorts and Disney features from the very late 1930s and the early 1940s. All of them are incredibly rare and are almost never offered for sale (to give you a sense of how incredibly rare they are, we at eMoviePoster.com have only previously auctioned three of them). More remarkably, all of the 15 are complete and uncut and most are in wonderful condition. It will surely be a long time before even a few of these are offered at auction again! Note that this item, along with many others, has a wonderful provenance! It comes from a remarkable collection of original 1940s Walt Disney pressbooks, mini lobby cards, and standees that just surfaced! Not only are all of these items extremely rare ones that are hardly ever auctioned, but they almost all are in really nice condition. The origin of these items is even more fascinating. Our consignor attended these movies as a young boy (he is currently over 80!), and a kindly theater owner gave him these items, and he has carefully preserved them all these many years, until now, when he has consigned them directly to us! We previously auctioned the original stills he had in our auction in May of 2016, and now we are auctioning the rest of his items. This is an incredibly rare opportunity to obtain some of the finest Disney pressbooks, mini lobby cards, and standees we have ever seen, and all of them will have new owners when these auctions close, because all start at $1 with no reserve. In addition to the items from this man's collection (saved from when it was a little boy over 70 years ago!), we also gathered together lots of other rare animation related movie paper items of all types, and together this is a wonderful offering of movie animation items! Many of these items will likely not be auctioned again for many years to come! Also note that this pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners purchased pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut!

Condition: good to very good, NO CUTS. This large pressbook (11" x 17 1/4") is complete and uncut and was never folded across the middle, which is a big plus, because most of these large pressbooks WERE folded across the middle (so they would fit with posters or lobby cards). There are many creases and smudges on the covers, but otherwise, the pressbook is in pretty nice condition (see our images)!
