An Original Vintage Theatrical Tri-Folded English Three-Sheet Stage Play Poster (measures 40" x 88 1/2") (Learn More)

Robinson Crusoe, the circa 1930s English stage play production. There are two three-sheet posters (plus a double crown) for this (we assume they are all from the same production, although they have very different artwork; one features cool artwork of a very sexy female with a hunting rifle, and the other shows a female with a colorful bird, and both posters also feature stereotypical artwork of the island native Friday. Note that our consignor wants to make it very clear that he in no way condones artwork of this sort, and recognizes that it was done back at the time when this poster was produced, but certainly, we all hope we will never see this type of stereotype artwork again)! A collector from England tells us he believes that this poster (and the other English stage play posters from other classic fairy tales) were used for local Christmas pantomimes (that were very professional productions) that were held all over England for many years. Most of the posters were produced by Taylors of Wombwell from 1929 to the late 1930s (but it seems likely that the posters we are auctioning date from the late 1930s). It was quite common in those pantomimes for women to play boys' roles, and for men to play the roles of unlikeable women (like witches and mean old ladies!). If anyone knows more about this play or this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here.
If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: IMPORTANT NOTICE: The Robinson Crusoe poster we are selling was printed on the back of sections of large posters that were apparently not used, and the printer saved money by printing on the back of those! This particular poster was printed on the back of a section of a "Letter of Introduction" English six-sheet, with Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy, and on the back of a small section of an English six-sheet from "When the Daltons Rode" (of course, it is also possible that those titles were printed on the back of unused "Robinson Crusoe" three-sheets!; we have no way of knowing which side was printed first). If anyone knows more about why these posters were printed on the back of each other, and which came first, please e-mail us and we will post it here. WE HAVE PICTURED BOTH SIDES OF THE POSTER, BUT YOU ARE OF COURSE PURCHASING ONE POSTER (the Robinson Crusoe complete poster is pictured at left, and the two incomplete posters are pictured at right)! WE ARE ALSO SELLING TWO OTHER EXAMPLES OF THIS SAME ROBINSON CRUSOE POSTER, BUT WITH DIFFERENT POSTERS PRINTED ON THE BACK, AND THOSE ARE IDENTIFIED ON THOSE LISTINGS! This English three-sheet was printed in 2 sections. This three-sheet poster was tri-folded only (which means there is one less vertical machine fold than usual). This means the poster has a significantly lesser number of folds than with three-sheets folded in the "regular" way, which is nice! Tri-folded three-sheets need to be sent in an oversized flat package, which measures roughly 12" x 32" x 1" high, so they cost more to send than regularly folded three-sheets, especially if they are sent to non-U.S. addresses.

Condition: fine. The poster was clearly never used and is in excellent condition!
