An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Insert Movie Poster (measures 14" x 36" [36 x 91 cm]) (Learn More) Make Way for Tomorrow, the classic 1937 Leo McCarey family relationship Great Depression melodrama ("A human drama of real love!"; "They want to live their own lives...! Can you blame them?"; "The world had passed them by!"; about an elderly couple in the Depression who through no fault of their own lose their pension, and they turn to their adult children to help them out, but the children are too busy with their lives to do much to help their parents) starring Victor Moore, Beulah Bondi, Fay Bainter, Thomas Mitchell, Porter Hall, Barbara Read, Louise Beavers, and Elisabeth Risdon. This is really a wonderful movie, and it seems extremely likely that the great Japanese director Yasujiro Ozu was strongly influenced by this movie. Legend has it that when director Leo McCarey was given the Best Director award for The Awful Truth, he commented "I was given it for the wrong movie", because he felt that Make Way For Tomorrow was his best work! If you have not seen this movie, and if you like "sentimental" movies, this is well worth seeing! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Not only that, but the only other first release poster we have auctioned was a single one-sheet! What is this poster? It was printed by Associated Displays Corporation which was a company based in New York City. Before it was discovered by noted poster dealer/historian Walter Reuben, collectors did not know the name of this company (and thought it to be located in the Midwest), and it is often referred to as the "other company" (and we will continue to refer to it that way, since collectors know it that way). From 1936 to roughly 1941, this company printed its own one-sheets and lobby card sets (and a very few inserts, half-sheets, three-sheets, 40x60s and stills) for three major studio movies (Warner Brothers, Paramount and United Artists, but no other studios). The items almost always feature a tiny legal disclaimer and cast credits only. The posters and lobby cards are from the original release of the movie, and almost always have completely different artwork from the regular studio release. They did this by combining elements from different film scenes onto one poster or card. Sometimes, "other company" posters have images that are the equal of those from the regular studio release posters. Note that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube. Condition: fair to good. The poster has darkened, typical of "other company" posters from this period. It has an area that did not darken in the upper right and there are creases and scuffs scattered throughout the poster with pinholes around the edges (see our image).
