An Original Vintage Autographed Piece of Original Art (measures 25 1/2" x 30" [65 x 76 cm]) (Learn More) Mad, the classic humor magazine ("Humor in a jugular vein") from the 1950s to the present. This comic was published by Bill Gaines (William Gaines) through his company, EC Comics (E.C. Comics), which he inherited from his father in 1947. It was originally a comic book edited by Harvey Kurtzman, and it was one of the famous EC Comics (E.C. Comics) that were banned in the mid-1950s, due to excessive horror content. At that point, publisher Gaines canceled most of his comic book titles, and turned Mad into a magazine with its 24th issue. Unfortunately, he and Kurtzman soon had a falling out, and Al Feldstein, who had been Gaines' writing partner on the Mad comic books (and Feldstein had edited Panic, EC's own imitation of Mad), took over, and the magazine became one of the great success stories of the 1950s and 1960s (led by its trademark character, Alfred E. Neuman, a goofy looking guy whose slogan was "What, me worry?"), with a circulation in the millions at its peak. Gaines never allowed any advertising of any kind in the magazine! In recent years, there was a "Mad" TV show which perfectly captures the spirit of the magazine! Artist: Jack Rickard Important Added Info: Note that in 1992, Warner Bros. sold many of the originals from the Mad magazines at an auction at Christie's in New York City. Our consignor purchased this art from that auction, and has owned it ever since, until consigning it for this auction! Of course, this cover art, by longtime Mad artist Jack Rickard, was from the issue that parodied the then current movie, Saturday Night Fever, and the cover parodies the art from the half subway poster, which shows many images of John Travolta in his iconic white suit, except in Rickard's art, one of those has been replaced by Alfred E. Neuman! Condition: very good. The art has a piece of clear acetate over it that was attached with clear tape in the top edge. But the acetate is easily lifted, so we took a picture of it without the acetate on it, although it will be sent to the winning bidder with the acetate (although they will likely not frame it that way!).
