Note that Woody Allen had performed stand-up comedy and had done writing for movies and TV, but it was not until 1966 when he bought the rights to an obscure Japanese movie and dubbed it with incorrect dialog and he was credited as a "director" on the movie, which was released as "What's Up Tiger Lily?".
