An Original 1947 (from the first release of this movie in The Netherlands) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Dutch Movie Poster (measures 19 3/4" x 27 1/4" [50 x 69 cm]) (Learn More) The White Cliffs of Dover, the 1944 Clarence Brown World War II (WWII) England patriotic romantic melodrama ("The romance that will live forever!"; "The greatest love story of our time!"; "Based on the poem 'The White Cliffs' by Alice Duer Miller"; a tearjerker about an American woman who marries an English nobleman right before World War I, and he is killed in action, and she raises their son, but when World War II starts, he wants to be involved and she can't bear the thought of losing him too, but ultimately she relents, and he is in fact killed in action; obviously, this sort of movie was designed to help people during World War II recognize that the needs of their country came ahead of their own) starring Irene Dunne, Alan Marshal, Roddy McDowall, Frank Morgan, Van Johnson, C. Aubrey Smith, Dame May Whitty, Gladys Cooper, Peter Lawford, and Elizabeth Taylor (12 years-old, in a bit part). Note that the young son is played by Roddy McDowall, and when he grows up, he becomes Peter Lawford! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this Dutch poster! Also note that this movie was released in 1947 through the MPEA, which distributed movies in Germany, Japan, and Austria right after World War II until 1950 (a lot of the people who went to those movies were U.S. servicemen stationed in those countries). However, until we received this poster, we did not realize that Holland was another one of the countries that had posters with the MPEA logo on them! Surely this is because there were enough servicemen there to warrant special releases for them as well. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had fine surface paper loss on parts of the folds and a Dutch stamp in the lower right white border area. It had slight darkening in the outer edges of the blank borders. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was well backed, and the restorer left the foreign stamp described above. Learn More about condition grades
