An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Belgian Movie Poster (measures 23 3/4" x 29 3/4" [60 x 76 cm]) (Learn More) Laughing Irish Eyes, the 1936 Joseph Santley New York City Ireland singing boxer mistaken identity gambling romantic boxing sports comedy (a really wacky story of a boxing promoter who sends an agent to Ireland to find a boxer who can become world champion, to win a bet the promoter made, and the agent goes with the promoter's daughter and they meet a singer who knocks out the Irish champ defending the daughter, and they hatch the scheme of bringing back the singer under the identity of the champ; when he gets back, gamblers have his opponents throw their fights, so that he can get a title shot and they can clean up betting on the current champion; the plan works, except the singer learns about it and starts back to Ireland right before the title fight, but the girl convinces him to stay, and he knocks out the champ, and gets a radio contract, plus wins the girl!) starring Phil Regan, Walter C. Kelly, Evalyn Knapp, Ray Walker, Mary Gordon, and Clarence Muse. Note that Republic Pictures in the 1930s was much more known for westerns, but they also made this very unusual boxing gambling movie, and it likely had a very limited release, because we have never auctioned any U.S. material from it! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: As noted above, first release material from this movie of any kind is incredibly rare. We were consigned this poster in 2014, and we auctioned it then, and now it has been re-consigned to us, so it is still the only movie paper of any kind we have ever auctioned from this movie. Also note that this is a rare "pre-War" Belgian poster. Prior to World War II, Belgian posters were much larger than the ones from after the war, and they are extremely rare (because during WWII, there was a massive paper shortage in Belgium, and they took virtually every poster and map, and printed new posters on the backs of them!). Note that Clarence Muse (the black African-American performer) played the boxer's sideman in the championship fight, and he is pictured on this Belgian poster! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good to fine. The poster had a few tiny bits of paper loss on the foldlines, but was otherwise in nice condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well!
