eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 6c132 STEAMBOAT BILL JR insert 1928 different art & inset photo of Buster Keaton, ultra rare! Date Sold 5/3/2018Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Insert Movie Poster (measures 14" x 36" [36 x 91 cm]) (Learn More) Steamboat Bill Jr. (released in some English-speaking countries as "Steamboat Bill Junior"), the classic 1928 Charles Reisner & Buster Keaton romantic father-son sailing ship adventure comedy (about a long lost son who returns to his tough, gruff sailor father, and he is initially a great disappointment to him) starring Buster Keaton (in the title role as William Canfield Jr.), Ernest Torrence, Tom McGuire, Tom Lewis, and Marion Byron. Note that this is the movie that includes the classic sequence of Buster Keaton in a hurricane, where the front of a house frame falls on top of him, and the window from the second floor saves him from death! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Armando Important Added Info: Note that first release 1928 movie paper from this movie is incredibly rare. We have never auctioned any first release movie poster from this movie (only a single lobby card) until we received this great insert! Also, note that the art on this poster is not signed, but almost all of Keaton's artwork posters from this time period were done by either Hap Hadley or Eaton. However, the herald (which features what appears to be the same art) is signed Armando, which could indicated Armando Seguso, but the art is not in his normal style, nor is the signature. If anyone knows more about who did the art on this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Condition: good. The poster had many small stains, smudges, scuffs, and some pinholes scattered throughout, with some creases, tears, and paper loss around the edges. Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to restoration. A talented restorer gel backed the poster (meaning they backed the poster onto a gel material) and they then performed restoration to the above defects, and then removed the gel backing, so that the poster still looks and feels like an original poster (and it is!), with no backing at all. However, you can still clearly see signs of the restoration scattered throughout. In addition, the poster was roughly handled after it was backed, and it acquired a long diagonal crease in the bottom right, running from the background in the left of the United Artists credit, through Torrence's clothes and into the right border by his shoulder. There is cracking and tiny surface paper loss along that crease. It is not all that distracting, and any restorer could surely touch up that area without re-backing the poster. Please bear in mind all of the above (and look at our super-sized image) before bidding on this incredibly rare poster! Learn More about condition grades
