An Original Vintage Linenbacked Circus Poster (measures 28 1/4" x 42" [72 x 107 cm]) (Learn More) The Dan Rice Circus (also known as the "Dan Rice 3 Ring Circus") was founded in 1848 by entertainer Dan Rice. Rice was a man of many talents, and in the span of his career he was a clown, animal trainer, songwriter, commentator, political humorist, strong man, actor, director, producer, dancer, and politician (he ran for Senate, Congress, and President of the United States but dropped out of each race). During the height of his career, Rice was a household name and he coined the terms "One Horse Show", "Greatest Show on Earth", and "Jump on the Bandwagon" began when Rice invited Presidential candidate Zachary Taylor to ride on Rice's circus bandwagon. However, with changes in circus venues and popular culture after the Civil War, his legendary talents have gradually slipped into almost total historical obscurity such that in 2001, biographer David Carlyon called him "the most famous man you've never heard of". If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster was never folded. It had discoloration and staining in the top border (perhaps because a snipe was once attached there). It has unevenness to some of the letters of the title and the blue background behind it, which might be a printing defect (see our image). Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
