An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41") (Learn More) The Life of Emile Zola, the 1937 William Dieterle (this is one of five biographical movies Dieterle directed for Warner Bros; nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) biography melodrama (about the life of the famous French writer; from the book 'Zola and His Time' by Matthew Josephson; "Story by Heinz Herald and Geza Herczeg"; winner of the Best Picture Academy Award) starring Paul Muni (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; in the title role as Emile Zola), Gale Sondergaard (as Lucie Dreyfus), Joseph Schildkraut (winner of the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film; as Captain Alfred Dreyfus), Gloria Holden (as Alexandrine Zola), Donald Crisp, Erin O'Brien Moore, Henry O'Neill, Morris Carnovsky, Louis Calhern, Robert Barrat (as Major Walsin-Esterhazy), and Marcia Mae Jones. Note that as usual, Paul Muni wanted to appear like the actual Emile Zola, so he played the part with a beard, and for the parts of the movie where Zola is older, he had white hair and glasses. Naturally, Warner Bros. did not think that an image of him in makeup would be helpful to attract moviegoers, so on some of the advertising, they used an image of young, handsome Paul Muni out of makeup, even though he never appears like that in the movie! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Condition: fair to good. The poster had several tears around the edges, in the center of the poster in Muni's chin, and in the background left of it as well as small vertical tears in the left of the bottom vertical foldline. There is paper loss in the right of the top border and in the middle of the right border. Someone put many small pieces of clear tape on the back of pin holes and small tears and white tape on the back of the longer tears. Some of the white tape has "stiffened", which makes it difficult to lay the poster flat. The same person who put the tape on the poster did very slight touch up to the front of the poster to the pin holes where the white tape showed through to the back. The poster is in urgent need of expert professional restoration. But the poster is mostly "all there", and after linenbacking by a talented professional, the poster will look fantastic, and it will likely require not that much paint restoration within the image.
