Oddly, the first pilot for it was not "picked up" by the network, but that was likely a lucky break, because star Jeffrey Hunter was then replaced with William Shatner, and the rest, as they say, is history! The franchise has spawned several television shows, over a dozen theatrical films, and many books, comics, and games.
