An Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10 1/4" [20 x 26 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) The Doorway to Hell, the 1930 Archie Mayo anti-Prohibition gangster crime thriller ("Based on the story by Rowland Brown") starring Lew Ayres (billed as "Lewis Ayres"; in his fourth credited movie role!), Dorothy Mathews, Leon Janney, Robert Elliott, James Cagney, Dwight Frye, and Charles Judels (apparently he had a major role, but his scenes were deleted prior to the movie's release). Note that this was James Cagney's second movie. In his first, "Sinner's Holiday", he had a relatively minor role, but was noticed, and was given a larger part in this early gangster movie. Just two movies later, he was given the starring role in "Public Enemy", and the rest, as they say, "is history"! Movie paper of any kind from his pre-Public Enemy movies is extremely rare, and, to the best of my knowledge, Cagney is not pictured on any of the posters from "Doorway to Hell"! Also note that Dorothy Mathews is somewhat of a mystery. She had several minor and uncredited roles and then got her big break in this movie, but it led to nothing but more uncredited roles. And we read that she had a screen test for Scarlett O'Hara in 1937, which seems odd. She then mostly retired and passed away in 1977. If anyone knows more about her, please e-mail us and we will post it here. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Condition: very good to fine. Learn More about condition grades
