Appears in Vintage Hollywood Posters 7 CATALOG SOLD OUT The image at right appears in the auction catalog we published as shown above and was sold long ago and we do NOT have it available for purchase. An Undated (probably 1954) Re-Release Vintage Theatrical Folded One-Sheet Movie Poster (measures 27" x 41") (Learn More) The Third Man (also released as "The 3rd Man"), the classic 1949 Carol Reed (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) English Vienna Austria crime film noir murder mystery mistaken identity thriller ("Cats loved him... And so did Women!"; "What a chase he led them!"; "He'll put you in a dither with his Zither"; based on a story "by Graham Greene"; "Hunted by men... Sought by women!"; "Presented by Alexander Korda and David O. Selznick"; about a man going to visit his old friend in post-War Vienna, and when he gets there, he discovers that the friend is dead, or is he?) starring Joseph Cotten, Alida Valli (billed as "Valli"), Orson Welles (even though Welles only appears in a small portion of the movie, he dominates it!), Trevor Howard, Bernard Lee, Paul Horbiger, and Hedwig Bleibtreu. Note that the musical score for this movie was by Austrian zither musician Anton Karas, and it was so memorable that they even made a tagline about it ("He'll put you in a dither with his Zither"). Also note that this was intended to be the first of several movies with producers David Selznick and Alexander Korda, but the men clashed frequently during the making of the movie, and they never worked together again. Also note that Orson Welles clashed with director Carol Reed, and reportedly, he wrote much of his character's dialog in the movie, and made other contributions to the script that likely drove Reed crazy! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that David Selznick would release his movies through major studios, but then release them himself over the next years. This was true for "The 3rd Man". This poster is undated, but it only says David Selznick and has no studio name, and based on the litho number, it almost certainly was printed in 1954.
Also note that while the artwork is similar to that of the 1949 one-sheet, it has some significant differences. Some might call it a better image, and I have never seen this particular image before! Condition: very good to fine. staple holes in the corners; 1/2" of separation at the bottom two crossfolds; 1/2" tears in the left of the top and bottom foldlines (in the solid black border); tiny separation at the ends of the bottom foldlines; some very minor scuffs and creases around the edges of the poster and along the foldlines Learn More about condition grades
