A Paperbacked German Special Poster (measures 25 3/4" x 38" [65 x 97 cm]) (Learn More) Atelier-Fest des Kunstler-Sanger-Vereins e.v. in der Schwabinger Brauerei (literally translates to "Studio-Fest of the Artist-Singer-Association e.v. in the Schwabinger Brewery"), the 1914 German poster promoting a carnival/festival to take place in Munich, Germany from February 17th to the 19th. This poster features Otto von Kursell of a man dancing with two ladies. Munich (the Bavarian capital) used to be a carnival stronghold from the turn of the 19th to the 20th century until well into the 1930s, and it is in fact alive and kicking today. In 1914 alone, there were 533 masked balls and 145 black and white balls. This phenomenon of decadent hustle and bustle was created in particular by the artists of the Schwabinger Boheme, at first in the form of wild studio festivals, but increasingly also by artists' balls. Artist: Otto von Kursell Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster had a few tears and creases along parts of the folds, with some tears and small paper loss around the edges. It had paper loss in the bottom right corner, but only blank white paper was affected. It had some small stains scattered across the bottom border. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to paperbacking. Someone mounted the poster onto a thin paper backing with little attempt at restoration (see our image).
