An Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Phillips Holmes had made an impression in some movies in the late 1920s. In 1931, he would get the lead in the first version of "An American Tragedy", which made it seem like he would become a major star, but that didn't materialize. He had a major affair with Libby Holman, but that was certainly complicated, and when they broke up, she immediately married his brother! Oddly, years later, Holman would have another very complicated affair with Montgomery Clift, who played the same part in the remake of "An American Tragedy", re-titled "A Place in the Sun". Sadly, Holmes died in a plane crash in 1942 at the age of 35. I am very surprised no one has made a movie about his life, or a joint movie about him and Libby Holman! Important Added Info: Note that our consignor says that this still is of this star as he appeared in An American Tragedy. Update: A knowledgeable collector tells us that while this image was likely taken for an earlier movie (they have a similar image stamped with "1930 Paramount on Parade"), it was most likely used after 1930 because the back of this still credits him as Phillips Holmes, instead of Phillips R. Holmes as he was previously credited. If anyone knows more, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Condition: very good. Learn More about condition grades
