An Original Vintage Theatrical Magic Show Pressbook (pb; measures 12 1/2" x 19 1/4" [32 x 49 cm]; 62 pages) (Learn More) Dante (born Harry August Jansen) was a Danish professional magician from the 1910s to the 1950s. He first worked solo under the name The Great Jansen before switching to Dante in 1922. Known throughout the world, Dante the Magician worked in vaudeville, burlesque, legitimate theatre, films, and television. His stage trademark was to utter three nonsense words, "Sim Sala Bim" during his performances to acknowledge applause. He only appeared in three movies, but two of them were notable: A-Haunting We Will Go (with Laurel & Hardy), and Jean Renoir's "The Golden Coach". Note that either Dante the Magician had a wonderful agent, or he was very highly regarded in the early 1940s, because when he made "A-Haunting We Will Go", he received equal billing to Laurel and Hardy, which we have not seen on any of their other movies! He passed away in 1955 at the age of 71. Important Added Info: Note that this is a really cool item! It was a promotional package that was sent to theaters all over the world to try to get them to book this magician. The cover is in the form of a steamer trunk with faux "labels" showing some of the many places around the world Dante had performed. Inside is everything you could possibly want to know about Dante, and what is especially cool is that it contains some "poster pages", showing the posters that were available to be ordered to theaters that booked him. We would think this is an extremely rare item. We don't know exactly when it dates from, but since some of the information inside is dated 1935, we would say it is almost certainly from that year. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Condition: very good to fine, NO CUTS. The pressbook has some minor wear around the edges but is overall in nice condition!
