An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked French One-Panel Movie Poster (measures approximately 47" x 63") (Learn More) The Red Dragon, the 1945 Phil Rosen Asian detective crime mystery thriller ("Suggested by Earl Derr Biggers' Character") starring Sidney Toler (as Charlie Chan), Fortunio Bonanova, Benson Fong (as Tommy Chan), Willie Best, and Carol Hughes. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! This poster was linenbacked, and one of the following is true: either the poster had minor defects, and was well backed, OR it had more significant defects, but they were extremely well restored, OR it had some very minor defects that were not completely restored, and are somewhat noticeable. You can tell which of the above is the case for this particular poster by reading our "pre-restoration" description and also by looking at our "super-sized" image of the actual poster (we are the only major auction company we know of that gives accurate detailed pre-restoration information about linenbacked posters to our bidders, but we wish everyone did!). Note that we gave this condition grade to a very few posters that were in pretty good condition prior to linenbacking, but which were not all that well linenbacked, and which could be fairly easily re-backed with only minor additional restoration. The poster had paper loss at the top two left crossfolds and creases, smudges, and some small tears on some foldlines. There was an area of paper loss in the left of the top border affecting the writing there and also paper loss in the center of the top border affecting that writing. There were creases, smudges, tears, and areas of paper loss in the other borders. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but the restorer did not replace the missing writing in the top border, likely assuming it would be matted out when the poster was framed. It would be a simple matter for a restorer to add that writing in without re-backing the poster. Learn More about condition grades
