The Crowd, the classic 1928 King Vidor (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) populist people-lost-in-a-big-city silent romantic family melodrama (nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; about a man who feels destined for greatness, but he ends up with a very mundane life with a wife and children, but once one of his children dies, he realizes just how much he had, and by the end of the movie, has regained much of his life) starring Eleanor Boardman, James Murray, Bert Roach, Estelle Clark, and Daniel G. Tomlinson. Note that star Eleanor Boardman was director King Vidor's wife, and he had to fight to persuade her to take this unglamorous role, but it was one of the best moves she made. Also, co-star James Murray was an unknown extra who King Vidor literally picked out of a crowd. Like his character in the movie, he had his chance at greatness, but soon after the movie was released, he became an alcoholic, and died in 1936, and is virtually forgotten today.
