An Original Vintage 8 1/4" x 10 1/4" [21 x 26 cm] Burlesque Still (Learn More) Alexandra the Great 48 was a transgender burlesque dancer and model from the 1950s to the 1960s. Footage of her can be seen in the 2010 documentary "Behind the Burly Q"! Alexandra was born Gary Paradis in 1940, and began dressing in women's clothes and worked at nightclubs and strip clubs in the 1950s. At some point, she had some amount of transgender surgery and became stripper Brandy Alexander. In 1963, The National Insider ran a cover story about her (now called "Gayle Sherman") headlined "My birth certificate is stamped 'MALE.' But my body is stamped 'FEMALE.'" and this was turned into a book the following year. She kept performing until 1988, and she became a cosmetologist. Note that there was a 1990s stunt woman named Gayle Sherman who has no connection to this performer, and there was also a performer in drag clubs named Brandy Alexander, who also has no connection. Important Added Info: Note that burlesque performers in the 1950s to 1970s would work in a circuit of burlesque theaters throughout the U.S. and Canada (and sometimes other countries!). They would have publicity 8x10s like this one that they would send to theaters to try to get bookings. This publicity still is an original from the time when this stripper performed. Also note that this still measures 8 1/4" x 10 1/4" [21 x 26 cm]. Condition: very good to fine. The still is in very nice condition! Learn More about condition grades
