An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Australian Daybill Movie Poster (db; measures 13 3/4" x 39 1/4" [35 x 100 cm]) (Learn More) The Cheat, the 1923 George Fitzmaurice silent romantic love triangle melodrama (based on the story by Hector Turnbull; a wild story with racist overtones; a South American woman elopes with a rich American stock broker, and her father disinherits her, and she is kidnapped by an Indian man who says he is a Prince, but he is really a crook; he cheats the woman out of money, but offers to forgive the debt if she will sleep with him, but when the woman refuses him, he literally "brands" his family's mark on her shoulder, and she shoots him; her husband takes the blame and is tried for the murder, but is acquitted when she reveals the brand of shame!) starring Pola Negri, Jack Holt, Charles de Rochefort, Dorothy Cumming, and Robert Schable. This is a remake of a 1915 movie of the same name starring Fannie Ward and Sessue Hayakawa. Note that this is a "lost" film which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: John Richardson Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this Australian daybill! Also note that Pola Negri had previously appeared in very depressing melodramas, and so when this movie played in Australia, it was given the tagline "Her first happy-ending picture."! Note that this is one of an amazing collection of 62 linenbacked Australian daybills that all have great art from Richardson Studio (or John Richardson, before he became "Richardson Studio"!), which many collectors feel have the best art and design of any Australian daybills, and are highly sought after by collectors. These were accumulated by a very dedicated collector over many years, and they are now being all offered at once (in 62 separate auctions), so this is a wonderful opportunity to obtain one or many of these daybills, many of which rarely are offered for sale or at auction. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair. The poster had small tears and paper loss around the edges, with a few areas of paper loss scattered throughout the image, where there were also creases and tears. Overall, the poster was in fair condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above.
