A Limited Edition Art Print (with art by Phantom City Creative; 123/150; measures 24" x 36" [61 x 91 cm]) (Learn More) The Vault of Horror was an American bi-monthly horror comic anthology series from the early 1950s. This comic was published by Bill Gaines (William Gaines) through his company, EC Comics (E.C. Comics), which he inherited from his father in 1947. Along with its sister titles, The Haunt of Fear and Tales from the Crypt, The Vault of Horror was popular, but in the late 1940s and early 1950s comic books came under attack from parents, clergymen, schoolteachers and others who believed the books contributed to illiteracy and juvenile delinquency. With the subsequent imposition of a highly restrictive Comics Code, E.C. Comics publisher Bill Gaines cancelled The Vault of Horror and its two companion horror titles in September 1954. The Vault of Horror hit newsstands with its April/May 1950 issue (which was #12, because it took over from War Against Crime, which was cost-saving for the publisher!) and ceased publication with its December/January 1955 issue (#40), producing a total of 29 issues. This was one of three EC horror comic titles published by Bill Gaines (later publisher of Mad Magazine). Since the ending of publication, all of the EC comics have been reprinted many, many times, in many formats, and there have been several movies and TV series based on them! Tim League, the consignor of all the prints in the 2,346 auctions (see below), knows that there will be a LOT of competition for some of the prints, and he wanted to give bidders a second chance to get some of the more desirable ones! So, on the 293 auctions that have this paragraph on them, it means that they are prints where there is an earlier auction for a different example of this print (and that earlier auction will have almost surely already ended BEFORE this auction), and this way, those bidders who "missed out" on the earlier example have this second chance to get this different example (but of course, they are not exactly the same, and the earlier example has a lower number)! An important note about the condition of the print in this auction (or, in the case of 25 of the auctions, prints). It comes from the personal collection of Tim League, and it has been carefully stored since it was first printed. In the case of all but 46 of the 2,344 of the prints, it is in wonderful condition, and likely looks exactly as it did when it was printed, and we give all those our "fine" grade, which is the highest grade we give (and which equates to most dealers' "mint" grade). In the case of a very small number of the prints (46 in all!), it acquired one or more defects, and in those cases we give it a lower grade, and explain in words what those defects are.
