An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded German Movie Poster (measures 37 1/4" x 54 1/2" [95 x 138 cm]) (Learn More) Maria Ilona, the 1939 (released in the U.S. in 1940) Geza Von Bolvary German historical romantic melodrama (about a Hungarian woman who helps the Austrian government put down a revolution, but then she becomes disenchanted with the changes in the Austrian government; the movie is based on a real woman, but it is only partially historically accurate) starring Paula Wessely (in the title role as Maria Ilona von Wolkersdorf), Willy Birgel, Paul Horbiger, Hedwig Bleibtreu, and Hermann Brix (NOT Bruce Bennett, whose actual name was Herman with one "n" Brix!; note that Bruce Bennett acted under his real name of Herman Brix until 1938, and then changed it to "Bruce Bennett", no doubt due to THIS Hermann Brix, who started acting in 1939). Note that this is a "forbidden" movie (likely because of the participation of Willy Birgel, who had appeared in several Nazi propaganda movies, and was banned from acting in any movies until 1947). This refers to around 60 movies that were made in Germany between 1933 and 1945, during the time the Nazis were in power in Germany. These movies are considered to be propaganda movies, which glorify the Nazi regime and their ideals. Immediately after World War II, a list of over 100 movies that were made between 1933 and 1945 was created, and those movies were not allowed to be shown at any time in Germany or Austria. Over the next decade, around 60 of those movies (including this one) were taken off the list so that they are allowed to be shown (but rarely are), and those movies are known as "forbidden movies", because even though they can now be shown, they could not be shown at all in the years right after World War II. The remaining 40 or so movies are known as "conditional" movies, because they are still not allowed to be shown in Germany or Austria, even in the present day, with the sole exception being when they are shown in an educational context, like at a university, and a speaker talks before and after the movie. All of the "forbidden" movies and "conditional" movies glorify Nazism in some respect, or they were created by directors or featured actors who were prominently associated with the Nazi party. Not only does it have a dated logo bottom left, but it is from the time when that logo included a swastika under the German eagle (see our image). Note that this item (and others we are auctioning in this set of auctions) come to us from the estate of Lee Sanders. Mr. Sanders was a nationally recognized projectionist, film poster collector, and union activist who passed away earlier this year, and the net proceeds from the sale of his varied and eclectic collection will be donated to promote film studies at the Besant School of Happy Valley in Ojai, Ca. Condition: good. The poster is completely separated on some foldlines, and there are many pinholes, tack holes, and some tears around the edges (see our image). Learn More about condition grades
