Date Sold 6/24/2018Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Sgt. Joe Louis on Tour, the 1943 World War II (WWII) boxing sports documentary featuring Joe Louis (billed as "Sgt. Joe Louis"). Note that Louis not only donated the proceeds from two of his fights to the Army and Navy relief efforts (totaling nearly $100,000 dollars, which As of 2020 is the equivalent of nearly 1.5 million!), he also staged 96 boxing exhibitions for U.S. troops worldwide during World War II! Note that this is a very mysterious film (likely a short). We know that there are lobby cards and stills from Toddy Pictures, and they have a 1943 copyright, which is the same year Joe Louis made a cameo appearance in Warner Bros' "This is the Army". Yet this film is not listed on any database we can find. Toddy Pictures re-released and re-titled a number of movies, but we don't think this is one of them. We know the Joe Louis enlisted in the army and in September 1943, he was a sergeant and took a group of soldier boxers on a tour of 90 army camps, and it seems likely that this movie was a compilation of footage from that tour, but why it appears in no databases we can't explain, although we did find it playing as a midnight show in some theaters in 1944. If anyone knows more about any of this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that first release 1943 movie paper from this Joe Louis boxing documentary is incredibly rare. We have never previously auctioned anything from this movie until we received this still! Condition: fair to good. Learn More about condition grades
