eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result #113 GAY DIPLOMAT TC '31 Lebedeff Date Sold 9/11/2001Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. Original Vintage Title Lobby Card (Measures 11" x 14") (Learn More) Gay Diplomat, the 1931 Richard Boleslawski (billed as "Richard Boleslavsky") World War I (WWI) Russia/Hungary romantic spy espionage melodrama (set during World War I, about a Russian war hero who is known as a playboy, who is sent to Hungary to try to find an enemy spy that they have no picture of; all he knows is that she is a beautiful woman, and where he goes in Bucharest, there are tons of beautiful women, and he has trouble figuring out which one is actually the spy!) starring Ivan Lebedeff ("Sensational new screen personality"), Genevieve Tobin, Betty Compson, Ilka Chase, and Purnell Pratt. Note that star Ivan Lebedeff was a real life World War I Russian war hero, who went to the U.S. in 1925 and met D.W. Griffith, who was taken by him, and starred him in The Sorrows of Satan in 1926. The following year, he starred opposite Gloria Swanson in The Love of Sunya. In 1931, RKO tried to recharge his career with a starring role in this movie (where he was playing a fictionalized version of himself, and he was even named Ivan in the movie!). But the movie did not make him a big star, and after this movie, his luck in movies ran out, and he played increasingly smaller roles in movies in the 1930s. He passed away in 1953 at the age of 58.
