An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded French One-Panel "Grande" Movie Poster (1p; measures 47" x 62 3/4" [119 x 159 cm]) (Learn More)

In Old Kentucky, the 1927 John M. Stahl silent Kentucky Derby horse racing sports gambling romantic family relationship melodrama ("The famous racing classic now a film sensation!"; "You'll cheer this down-in Dixie film romance!"; "Suggested by the play by Charles Dazey"; the film included sequences at the Kentucky Derby, and the ad campaign shows a horseshoe and horses at a race track!) starring James Murray, Helene Costello, Wesley Barry, Stepin Fetchit, Dorothy Cumming, and Carolynne Snowden. Note that this movie was remade in 1935 with Will Rogers.

Important Added Info: Note that the unknown French poster artist who drew this poster chose to not focus on the leads of the movie, but instead on Stepin Fetchit and Carolynne Snowden. This would never have happened in the U.S. at that time, because those actors were black African Americans. However, the artist sadly drew them in a caricature fashion that was popular at the time, but will never again be seen on any posters, due to their strong racist overtones. We auction such posters for their historical value, showing the views held at that time.

Also note that this is an extremely rare pre-World War II French poster, which we have never auctioned before! Virtually no French posters survive from before, during, or right after World War II. Apparently there were many paper shortages in France during World War II, resulting in the destruction of almost all pre-World War II posters!
