An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More)

Brotherly Love, the 1936 Dave Fleischer animated animation cartoon comedy short ("Popeye the Sailor"; "Let's have peace"; "By arrangement with King Features Syndicate, Inc and Segar"; about Olive Oyl preaching the need for peaceful coexistence on the radio, and Popeye hears it, and he goes through the streets trying to help everyone he can, but when he tries to break up a gang fight, he is overwhelmed, and then many of Olive's other followers come to his aid!) featuring the voices of Jack Mercer (as Popeye the Sailor), Mae Questel (as Olive Oyl), and Gus Wickie (as Bruiser). Note that Dave Fleischer (along with his brother Max) were legends and pioneers in animated films. They made the very first sound cartoon in 1924, beating Walt Disney by several years. They had great success with their Out of the Inkwell cartoons, Popeye, Betty Boop, and much more, including the Superman cartoons, widely regarded as the finest cartoons ever made! But after Walt Disney made Snow White, the Fleischers made Gulliver's Travels, which did not do well at the box office, and their next major project, Mr. Bug Goes To Town, had the bad fortune to be released two days before the attack on Pearl Harbor, and it also did poorly. At this same time, the Fleischer brothers had a major falling out, and in 1942, they split completely. After they made the last of their Superman cartoons in 1942, Paramount ceased control of their studio. Each of the brothers made a few more cartoons, but their careers were essentially over.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair. The poster had large paper loss in the top right corner that removed the top of the banner and all of the word "LET'S", and also the top of the word "HAVE", and part of the right end of the last "E" of "POPEYE". There was paper loss in the left 10" of the bottom border, extending into the yellow background and in the bottom 3" of the left border, also extending into the background. It had light water stains over the left of the title and in the arm of the man reaching over the title. There was small paper loss at the crossfolds and a few tiny bits of paper loss on parts of some folds. It had lots of pinholes, tears, and paper loss around the edges, and some paper loss scattered in the image. Overall, the poster was in poor to fair condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer had an example of the poster to work from (because it is in the Hershenson/Allen archive), but they only restored the top right corner and the left of the bottom border (and did a nice job of it), and then they stopped, either because the owner of the poster did not want to do more, or because they did not want to spend more. Certainly, a talented restorer could finish the restoration of the poster, but bear the poster's considerable defects in mind before bidding on it, and also bear in mind the cost of additional restoration.
