An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Australian One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 26 3/4" x 40 1/4" [68 x 102 cm]) (Learn More) Mad Max, the classic 1979 (released in the U.S. in 1980, and released in Italy as "Interceptor") George Miller Australian post-apocalyptic action crime thriller ("The Maximum Force of the Future."; "When the gangs take over the highway... Remember he's on your side"; "The last law in a world gone out of control. Pray that he's out there somewhere."; "Music by Brian May"; "Written by James McCausland and George Miller") starring Mel Gibson (in the title role as Mad Max Rockatansky), Joanne Samuel, Hugh Keays-Byrne (as Toecutter), Steve Bisley, Tim Burns, and Roger Ward NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is the "Holy Grail" of Mad Max one-sheets for collectors! When the movie was first released, they did not know it would be a big hit, and one-sheets with a predominantly purple background were printed and used. But more theaters wanted to show the movie than there were posters, so an additional print run of one-sheets with a predominantly orange background were printed, but that print run is believed to have been limited to 75 to 100 one-sheets (they STILL had no idea how big a hit this movie would be!), and each one is slightly different from the other! The orange varies in color from one poster to the next and how much of the poster has orange on it varies as well! Some people say that this orange poster was printed by the M.A.P.S. employees in the middle of the night, and there are others who think that the orange poster predates the purple one. After the movie continued to be very successful, a new one-sheet with a predominantly blue background was created (that poster has a semi-gloss or matte finish), and all three color versions are extremely desired by collectors, but this "orange" style is the most desired of the one-sheets, and due to the limited number printed, rarely comes up for sale or auction! Note that it might not SEEM like this poster is as rare as we are saying, because we auctioned two examples of it in 2013 and 2016. But not only were those the only examples of this poster we have ever auctioned, but the example we are currently auctioning is the exact same poster that we auctioned in 2013, so we still have only seen two examples of the poster (and the poster we auctioned in 2016 was from the world's foremost Mad Max collector, who consigned his collection to us after many years of collecting on this title!). Note that all but 28 of the folded one-sheets in this Part I of eMoviePoster.com's December Major Auction were consigned to us by legendary French dealer/collector Dominique Besson. Dominique Besson started collecting movie posters in 1981, and became a dealer in French and European posters in 1994, and has remained as a top dealer ever since! But in addition, 30 years ago, Dominique began collecting U.S. one-sheets, first those with Saul Bass art, and then adding Alfred Hitchcock posters, then Humphrey Bogart, and he finally ended up collecting in an amazing total of 47 different categories, purchasing the posters from all over the world! Now the time has come to sell this wonderful collection, and Dominique has chosen eMoviePoster.com to do so, through our auctions! As noted above, all but 28 of the folded one-sheets in this Part I come from this more remarkable collection (the 28 that do not were consigned to us by other collectors, and are clearly marked). This is not all of the Dominique Besson collection we are auctioning. In addition, there are approximately 200 more folded one-sheets that will be in Part IV of this special auction (ones from the 1970s to present), and there are approximately 100 unfolded one-sheets that will be in Part III (including many great ones). This is a very rare opportunity to purchase folded one-sheets (all of which have had no professional restoration) from one of the greatest one-sheet collections assembled! Note that this one-sheet is from the category that Dominique Besson collected on that he labeled "Fantastic" (1970s and later horror/sci-fi). Condition: very good. The poster has pretty minor fold and border wear, as seen in our super-sized image. There are creases in the top right of the poster (above and below the right end of the top horizontal fold) and some other light creases scattered throughout the poster. Someone wrote the title on the back of the upper right blank border. The poster could absolutely be displayed and enjoyed as it is, or one could choose to have the above defects corrected through linenbacking. Either way, the new owner will have a great and incredibly rare poster to display on their wall! Learn More about condition grades
