Griffith biography & stamp! Date Sold 9/5/2021Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Autographed First Day Cover (measures 3 3/4" x 6 1/2" [10 x 17 cm]) (Learn More) Stella Adler was an actress from the 1930s to the 1940s. She was part of one of the most famous Jewish acting families ever, which included her parents Jacob and Sarah Adler, and her brothers Charles, Jay, and Luther. She was one of the people involved in the founding of the Group Theatre in 1931, and later married Harold Clurman, one of the founders. According to Marlon Brando, she was obsessed with becoming a traditional Hollywood leading lady, and had a nose job in 1937, and began acting under the name "Stella Ardler" in "Love On Toast", but she did not achieve the success in Hollywood she so wanted, and she pretty much quit acting in movies after that, except for a few minor roles. She became an acting teacher and was a mentor to the very young Marlon Brando, and was one of the early proponents of "The Method", a revised acting technique derived from, but different from, the method used at the Group Theatre in the 1930s AND Lillian Gish was born in 1893. She was one of the most legendary actresses of early cinema, with lead roles in Birth of a Nation and Intolerance. When sound came in she oddly switched almost entirely to the stage (as Paul Muni would do a few years later), just when most stage actors were moving TO Hollywood. She did have some choice films roles in later years, but none more memorable than as the righteous Miss Cooper in Charles Laughton's Night of the Hunter (who can forget her singing "Bringing in the Sheaves" with crazy preacher Robert Mitchum?), and in 1987, at the age of 92, she appeared alongside Bette Davis in The Whales of August! She passed away in 1993, at the age of 99. Some of her other movies include: The Wind, Ben-Hur, and Duel In the Sun (nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film) Important Added Info: ote that this item (which is a first day of issue envelope for the D.W. Griffith stamp) has been personally autographed (signed) by BOTH Stella Adler AND Lillian Gish! Our consignor is a longtime collector who purchased this signed item from a reputable dealer.
