An Undated (probably 1940s) Re-Release Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Something to Sing About (released in France as "Hollywood Hollywood"), the 1937 Victor Schertzinger Hollywood actor musical comedy ("Dancing... Romancing and Packing a Real Wallop! The No. 1 Dynamo of the screen goes to town in his latest and greatest role."; "It's something to cheer about!"; "Original Story, Music and Direction by Victor Schertzinger"; about a New York bandleader who goes to Hollywood and appears in a movie, when the filming is over he marries his fiance and they go on a honeymoon, but in the meantime the movie is a huge hit and he is lured back to Hollywood, which puts a strain on his new marriage) starring James Cagney ("A Cagney You Have Never Seen!"), Evelyn Daw, William Frawley, Mona Barrie, Gene Lockhart, James Newill, Harry Barris, Cully Richards, Candy Candido, William Davidson, Richard Tucker, Marek Windheim, Johnny Arthur, Dwight Frye, and Philip Ahn. Note that this movie was made when Cagney was having a major dispute with Warner Bros., not just about salary, but also about them forcing him to make gangster movie after gangster movie. So he signed to make this movie with Grand National, a small studio, and it is a parody of the beginning of his own career, because he was a dancer on Broadway who made Public Enemy, and he thought that might be a one time thing, and that he would return to Broadway, but it made him a star (and typecast him as a gangster). However, this movie turned out to be a major flop, which really hurt Grand National, because they spent over $900,000 on it, which crippled the studio and put them out of business a few years later. What makes it doubly sad is that they had the rights to Angels with Dirty Faces at the same time as this movie, and they chose to make this movie first! Had they made Angels first, it might have made the studio much more successful! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have never auctioned this poster before (and its image was also used to advertise a re-release of Cagney's "Great Guy", and possibly other Cagney movies), but bear in mind its major defects described below. Also note that this is one of 17 linenbacked posters we were consigned that were damaged by water. All of the posters (which we are auctioning in 17 separate auctions) became wet after they were backed, and the owner did not discover it immediately, and they dried out, causing creases and cracking scattered throughout, and they surely have mildew and possibly mold. They ABSOLUTELY need to be removed from the old linen and properly re-backed (during the process, the restorer can kill any living mold or mildew), and afterwards, the poster can again be displayed, but this is a fairly expensive process, so please DO NOT bid on this poster unless you can accept its extremely significant defects and the cost of restoring it. It should be handled very carefully until it is properly restored. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: poor to fair. As described above, the poster was significantly water damaged after it was linenbacked. Our super-sized image gives you a good sense of how the poster currently appears. It absolutely needs to be re-backed by a talented professional, so please very much bear this in mind before bidding on this poster. Due to the poster's much lesser condition, it will not be returnable, so only bid if you are certain you want it. Learn More about condition grades
