An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Teaser One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27 3/4" x 39 1/2" [70 x 100 cm]) (Learn More) Bullitt, the classic 1968 Peter Yates San Francisco California crime car chase action thriller ("The word 'cop' isn't written all over him - something more puzzling is."; "There are bad cops and there are good cops - and then there's Bullitt."; "Bullitt comes to this theatre soon. That ought to shake up the place pretty good. Not many freaky cops like Bullitt around. You look at the Italian shoes and the turtleneck and you have to wonder. You listen to the official beefs about 'personal misconduct,' 'disruptive influence,' you figure he's got to be up for trade. But when some rare Chicago blood starts spilling in San Francisco, they give Bullitt the mop. They weren't exactly doing him a favor. But they've done a great big one for you."; "Detective Lt. Frank Bullitt - some other kind of cop. Pity the guy he works for."; "Based on the novel 'Mute Witness' by Robert L. Pike"; about a detective who drives a 1968 Ford Mustang GT fastback while pursuing professional hitmen who murdered the wrong guy and let's not forget the really cool chase scenes!) starring Steve McQueen (in the title role "as Bullitt"), Robert Vaughn, Jacqueline Bisset, Don Gordon, Robert Duvall, Simon Oakland, and Norman Fell NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this one-sheet measures 27 3/4" x 39 1/2" [70 x 100 cm]. Also note that this is a teaser one-sheet (note the complete lack of credits on the poster). What exactly is this poster, which likely next to no one viewing this auction has ever seen before, because not only have we never auctioned it, but we can't find that anyone has ever auctioned it before! It was consigned to us by a very longtime collector who bought it from major London dealer Tony Nourmand over two decades ago. At that time, Nourmand did not know anything more about exactly what the poster is. But when it was consigned to us, our owner, Bruce Hershenson, realized that he had seen this image before, in the pressbook for this movie. We have reproduced that page from the pressbook, which has an image of a poster that looks just like this, EXCEPT that there are reviews in most of the background areas, with "A terrific movie" at the top! The pressbook says that those "review" posters were available free to theaters and there is an order form elsewhere in the pressbook. If those posters were made and sent out for free to any theater that wanted them, one would think that there would surely be a number of them surviving today, and yet we have never auctioned even one. That would imply that the poster was likely never made, perhaps to save money. This may have been because Warner Bros. did something very unusual with the "regular" one-sheet for the movie, which is that they put "Bullitt comes to this theatre soon..." on the poster, something that is normally only done with teaser one-sheets. Yet they put it on the regular one-sheet that was displayed in theaters while they were showing the movie! So maybe that was a cost-cutting measure, and that would likely tie in to why the free review poster was not made. BUT WHAT IS THIS POSTER? We suspect it may be a test version of the review poster, done without the review text or credits and rating from the bottom of the poster. That would make the most sense. In any event, it is surely the most rare Bullitt poster there is, and may well be the only surviving example (and if it is a test poster, likely only a few were created in the first place). If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had pretty minor fold wear. Its background color had unevenly faded in portions. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. An extremely talented restorer painted over the orange background to make it all its original color, and they did a superb job, because I think very few collectors would realize this had been done if it were not pointed out to them. Of course, one would prefer another example of this poster without this restoration, but we know of no other example of this poster (see above for much more on it). The poster will display wonderfully on the new owner's wall! Learn More about condition grades
