Date Sold 12/9/2018Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Linenbacked One-Sheet Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Universal-International News was one of the series of newsreels released by Universal Studios from at least the early 1920s through 1967. The earliest newsreels we know of were called "International News", and Universal made one-sheets for those that had a series of headlines on them, but no image except for a cool border design. In the 1930s and 1940s, they were called "Universal News Reel" and the posters for those also had headlines, and sometimes small images. In the 1950s and 1960s, they were called "Universal-International News". This poster is from the 1950s, and apparently few theaters ordered this poster for any of the newsreels, because all of them are incredibly rare! In 1976, the newsreels' owner, MCA, made the unusual decision to turn over ownership of all of the newsreels to the National Archives. The decision effectively ended Universal's copyright claim, releasing the films into the public domain. Because royalties no longer have to be paid in order to broadcast them, Universal Newsreels have become a popular source of file footage in recent years. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that oddly, while a number of one-sheets from Universal's 1920s and 1930s newsreels HAVE survived, virtually none of the one-sheets from the later newsreels have survived (as noted above, perhaps it is because theaters stopped ordering them). We have never before auctioned this poster (or any other poster from a later Universal newsreel) until we were consigned this one! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good to fine. The poster had minor fold and border wear. Overall, the poster was in very good to fine condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well. Learn More about condition grades
