Date Sold 4/21/2011Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Dutch Canvas Painting (measures 59" x 93 1/2" [150 x 237 cm]) (Learn More) Mysterious Doctor Satan, the 1940 John English & William Witney masked super hero mad scientist science fiction (sci-fi) horror serial ("A Republic Serial in 15 Chapters") starring Eduardo Ciannelli (billed as "Edward Ciannelli"; in the title role as Doctor Satan), Robert Wilcox (as Bob Wayne, and also as "Copperhead", the mysterious masked super hero), William Newell, C. Montague Shaw, Ella Neal, Dorothy Herbert, William Whitney, John English, and Jack Mulhall. Note that posters and lobby cards from this serial have always been popular, both because it is a science fiction serial with a masked super hero (he has a secret identity of "Bob Wayne", and it is not hard to guess where they got that name from!), and because it has a great funky robot that appears prominently on all of the posters! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: This poster was found in The Netherlands. It was created for a Dutch movie theater in 1940. Someone painted this image directly onto a piece of canvas and it was displayed at the theater. After it was displayed, the canvas was folded up, and it was stored that way until it was recently discovered (and it will need to be sent in a larger-than-normal flat package). Condition: good. The painting was removed from a stretcher and there was a blank thicker canvas around the edges with nail holes in it, and someone attached a 1" strip of light blue canvas all around the edges of that blank border canvas to create the illusion of a "frame". There are scuffs, smudges, tiny dots of paper loss, and some staining scattered throughout the image (look at our super-sized image to get a good sense of the condition). There was a tear in the lower right corner of the canvas, and someone put thick tape on the back of that tear. Please do not bid on this item unless you can accept its defects described above or are willing to pay to have them properly restored! Learn More about condition grades
