I'm high-powered director Robert Altman, and I'm here on location filming my latest high-powered movie, 'The Long Goodbye!'"; "The film is full of fun-murder, maiming, drunkenness, infidelity, topless yoga freaks, four-letter words- EVERYTHING! Like my first big success, M*A*S*H, it's got the same key ingredient!"; "What's that?"; "Good taste!"; "Here's our star Elliott Gould! Elliott plays Phillip Marlowe, a hard-bitten cynical private eye trying to solve an incredible mystery!"; "With so many other actors around, why did you pick me??"; "That's the mystery!"; "This is Nina van Pallandt who portrays a femme fatale involved in a deceptive plot of shadowy intrigue!"; "How do you want me to play it?"; "From memory!"; "And here's Jim Bouton in the role of Terry Lennox, a small-time mug! You'll enjoy watching Jim strike out on a new career!"; "Strike out?? Is that a clever reference to my one-time skill as a baseball pitcher??"; "No, as an actor!"; "Finally we've got Sterling Hayden as a deranged novelist, 'Laugh-In's' Henry Gibson as a quack and psychiatrist and Mark Rydell as a sadistic mobster who disfigures helpless women!"; "Like I said 'The Long Goodbye' is a fun movie!"; "'I have two friends in the world. One is a cat. The other is a murderer.' -Elliott Gould as Philip Marlowe"; "'Nothing says goodbye like a bullet...'- Philip Marlowe"; "*Philip Marlowe - The greatest of all 'private eye' characters - created by Raymond Chandler"; "Based on the novel by Raymond Chandler"; with music by John Williams) starring Elliott Gould, Nina Van Pallandt, Sterling Hayden, Mark Rydell, Henry Gibson, David Arkin, Jim Bouton, and Arnold Schwarzenegger (uncredited in his second movie role as a hood!). Note that this film was first released in early 1973 but withdrawn shortly after so that the marketing could be revised and new posters created for a late 1973 release. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is the first time that we have ever auctioned a style B one sheet for this movie! Note also that there is controversy about this poster. We have seen the art credited to Richard Amsel (who did the regular one-sheet and several other posters for the movie), but it has a completely different image from those posters, and it is not recognizable as being by Amsel. That is not to say it is definitely NOT by him, just that we are not sure! If anyone has definitive information about the art on this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Note that this is one of 188 folded one-sheets in this Part IV of eMoviePoster.com's December Major Auction that were consigned to us by legendary French dealer/collector Dominique Besson (we auctioned 993 of his folded one-sheets in Part I of this auction, and we auctioned his 113 unfolded one-sheets in Part III, and now we are auctioning his final 188 folded one-sheets in this Part IV). Dominique Besson started collecting movie posters in 1981, and became a dealer in French and European posters in 1994, and has remained as a top dealer ever since! But in addition, 30 years ago, Dominique began collecting U.S. one-sheets, first those with Saul Bass art, and then adding Alfred Hitchcock posters, then Humphrey Bogart, and he finally ended up collecting in an amazing total of 47 different categories, purchasing the posters from all over the world! Now the time has come to sell this wonderful collection, and Dominique has chosen eMoviePoster.com to do so, through our auctions! After Part IV closes, we will have auctioned all of this collection. Condition: good. There is heavy fold and border wear and there is tiny paper loss in the center crossfold. There are some light creases scattered throughout. It is otherwise in pretty good condition and if one chose to have it restored it would look great, although I imagine many collectors would be happy with this poster as it is.
