An Original 1934 (from the first release of this movie in Denmark) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Danish Movie Poster (measures 24 1/2" x 33 1/2" [62 x 85 cm]) (Learn More) Flying Down to Rio, the classic 1933 Thornton Freeland South America Rio De Janeiro Brazil airplane aviation pilot romantic love triangle musical ("Musical Romance Staged in the Clouds..."; "Too big for the world... So they staged it in the clouds... Too beautiful for words... So they set it to music!"; "Come, take a joy ride through the sky!"; "Romance that soars on the wings of song") starring Dolores Del Rio, Gene Raymond, Paul Roulien, Ginger Rogers, Fred Astaire, and Blanche Friderici. Note that this was the first of the ten movies Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers made together, which explains why they were fourth and fifth billed, and not pictured on any poster art! Also note that this movie was made at a time when Hollywood had a "love affair" with South America in general, and Brazil (and Rio de Janeiro). Paul Roulien was a Brazilian singer who came to Hollywood in 1931, and he sang in several movies. In this movie, he was part of a romantic love triangle with Dolores Del Rio and Gene Raymond, and it was his best role. In 1934, he returned to Brazil and quit acting in 1938. Artist: Erik Frederiksen Important Added Info: Note that the U.S. one-sheet sells in the high five figures (at least!), and this poster seems to surely be even more rare than that poster (because this is the only example of this poster we have ever seen), and it has completely different excellent artwork! Also note that the art on this poster is signed "Erik F.". The artist's full name is Erik Frederiksen, and we have been told by a Danish poster expert that he not only drew movie posters in Denmark in the 1930s but he also drew travel posters. We had never seen any art by this artist prior to discovery of a group of Danish posters we auctioned in 2009, and it appears that few Danish collectors or dealers had seen them either, because all of the posters sold for quite high prices, and there was much competitive bidding for each one! Certainly he must be regarded as one of the premier poster artists of the 1930s, but he is not known today, likely because of the extreme scarcity of his posters. Now we have been re-consigned five of those posters we auctioned in 2009 (we had never seen them prior to 2009, and we have not seen any other examples of them since). What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had triangular paper loss in the bottom right corner measuring 3" high by 4" wide. It affected the "FILM" of "OPERETTEFILM" and the "N" of "JORGEN" and the entire "S. JORGENSEN", which was missing. Other than this paper loss, the poster had creases and scuffs on parts of some foldlines, pinholes and tiny paper loss in each corner, and the entire poster had darkened somewhat. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking (its only significant defect was the paper loss in the bottom right corner, which solely affects the words described above). The missing area was expertly re-created (we do not know of any other example of this poster, but we had another poster from the same period with the same writing at the bottom, so we knew exactly what was missing). Minimal restoration was performed to the minor defects in the rest of the poster described above. The poster was very nicely backed, and I doubt hardly any people would know of the missing area unless they were told of it, and of course, it is a tiny fraction of the poster and does not affect the artwork. I hope that this great poster sells to someone who will display it on their wall, and I envy them already! Learn More about condition grades
