An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) I Dream Too Much, the 1935 John Cromwell romantic musical comedy ("Open the floodgates of your heart for a new romantic thrill!... Lily Pons!... Brilliant, beautiful, irresistible... As the girl who fought her way from the tinsel of the night clubs to the top-most rungs of fame!"; "Music by Jerome Kern, Composer of 'Roberta'"; the old story of a struggling young composer who meets a pretty singer and they impulsively marry; but he can't get work, and she becomes a major singing star, which causes much friction between them) starring Lily Pons, Henry Fonda (second billed in his third movie role!), Eric Blore, Osgood Perkins, Lucien Littlefield, Lucille Ball, Mischa Auer, and Scotty Beckett. Note that Lily Pons was a real life opera star who was drafted into movies after the great success of Jeanette MacDonald, and for her first one, she was given this movie, with music by Jerome Kern, who had composed the music for the hit movie "Roberta" the year before. But she only appeared in three movies between 1935 and 1937, and then returned to opera singing. Also note that Henry Fonda had achieved success on Broadway from 1932 to 1934, and in 1935, he starred in THREE movies (his first three!), surely one of the most remarkable debuts of any movie actor, and he certainly proved that he deserved it, going onto a very long and distinguished career! The poster was found in a Dutch archive and it has a circular Dutch stamp at bottom center. It had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds and some tiny areas of paper loss in the 1" of the vertical foldline below the top crossfold. It has tears and tiny paper loss in the top quarter of the vertical foldline and in the left half of the top foldline, with a lesser amount of wear on the other folds. It had a long diagonal tear that began at the middle of the left border and ran down into the white background and through the middle of the "E" of "DREAM" in the title and ending just below the "A". Someone once put large pieces of paper tape on the back of that area. The poster had tears, pinholes, and some tiny paper loss around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did little restoration to the defects described above (it seems likely they didn't even remove the paper tape from the back of the middle left described above). However, the poster still displays pretty well just as it is, and certainly, a talented restorer could remove the poster from the old backing and have it re-backed, after which it would display fantastically (but this would involve much expense, so bear that in mind before bidding on this poster).
