An Original Vintage Autographed Marriage Certificate (measures 6 1/2" x 8" [17 x 20 cm]). Also included is a signed deluxe 8" x 10" still. (Learn More)

William A. Wellman was a director and producer from the 1920s to the 1950s. Some of his films include: The Public Enemy, A Star is Born, and The Ox-Bow Incident. He passed away in 1975 at the age of 79. AND Dorothy Coonan was an actress and dancer in Busby Berkeley musicals. She was cast in "Wild Boys of the Road" in 1933, when she was 20, in an important part as a girl disguised as a boy. She caught the eye of the 17 year older director William Wellman, who would marry her the following year, and she would become Dorothy Coonan Wellman. She was his fifth wife, and he was only 37 years old at the time, but he credits her with "having rescued him", and she retired, and they remained married until he passed away in 1975, having had 7 children together (and he had one other child from one of those previous 4 wives). Dorothy passed away in 2009 at the age of 95.
Important Added Info: Note that this marriage certificate has been personally autographed (signed) in 1934 by BOTH William A. Wellman AND Dorothy Coonan Wellman! Also included in this auction is a deluxe signed 8" x 10" still of Dorothy Coonan (taken by photographer Elmer Fryer), who was Mr. Wellman's wife (the photo is inscribed to Wellman's parents, who she addresses as "Mother and Dad Wellman")! The items could be matted together to create a cool display. This lot was originally auctioned at a TCM/Bonham's auction in 2019, and it was consigned by William Wellman Jr. The lot does not have a certificate of authenticity, but as it was originally from William Wellman Jr., we are certain the signatures are authentic.

As is true of all the signed items we are currently auctioning, we give every buyer 30 days in which to review what they purchased (although we prefer they do any "authenticating" while the auction is "live" and before they place a bid) and they can return any item as long as it is within 30 days of the end of the auction. On non-signed items, we give a "lifetime guarantee" on everything we auction, but on signed items, we give the above modified guarantee of 30 days after the auction closes.

Condition: very good. Both items are in pretty nice condition!
