An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Style A One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27 1/2" x 41" [70 x 104 cm]) (Learn More)

Bluebeard's Eighth Wife, the 1923 Sam Wood silent romantic multiple marriage melodrama ("Screen Version by Sada Cowan"; "From Charlton Andrews' Adaptation of Alfred Savoir's Play"; about an American millionaire who has been married seven times, and, while traveling to Paris, he meets a beautiful aristocratic but poor beauty, and he marries her on the spur of the moment, but when she finds out about all his previous wives, she tries to drive him away because she thinks he will leave anyway, but when he finally does give up hope, she realizes he DID love her and tries to keep him!) starring Gloria Swanson (in the title role as Mona deBriac), Huntley Gordon, Charles Greene, Lianne Salvor, and Paul Weigel. Note that this movie was loosely remade in 1938 by Ernst Lubitsch with Gary Cooper and Claudette Colbert in the lead roles! Note that this is a "lost" film which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist.

If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that there are two different styles of one-sheet for this movie. The "A" style, which is the one offered here, has a wonderful stone litho image of Gloria Swanson in a wedding gown in the foreground, with her fiance's seven previous wives in the background behind her! The style B one-sheet has solely a profile image of Swanson, and she is not in a wedding gown. Both posters originally came from the legendary Charles A. Dyas collection, which was auctioned by Bruce Hershenson at Christie's in 1990 and 1991. This poster is the same poster that was auctioned at Christie's in 1990. It was re-consigned and again auctioned at Christie's in 1994, and now the same poster has been re-consigned 19 years later (it is the only example of this poster we are aware of!). Also note that this poster measures 27 1/2" x 41" [70 x 104 cm].

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good to fine. The poster had tiny paper loss at the bottom crossfold and very minor wear on the foldlines. There was a 3" tear in the top left blank corner and paper loss in the bottom left blank corner. The poster has darkened slightly unevenly in the blank borders. Overall, the poster was in very good to fine condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well!
