An Original 1947 (from the first year of release in Australia) Vintage Theatrical Folded Australian Daybill Movie Poster (measures approximately 13" x 30") (Learn More)

The Outlaw: The Story of Billy the Kid, the classic 1946 Howard Hughes biographical cowboy western romantic melodrama ("Trigger-fast action!"; "Sensation too startling to describe!"; "The last time Howard Hughes said he had someone to show you, he gave you two new stars... Jean Harlow and Paul Muni. Now he makes the same promise again and presents Jane Russell and Jack Buetel"; "At Last.. now you can see Howard Hughes' daring production The Outlaw"; produced by Howard Hughes) starring Jack Buetel (as Billy the Kid; "The Outlaw!"), Jane Russell (in her first big screen role!; "introducing Jane Russell"; "Mean.. Moody.. Magnificent"; "The woman who made him notorious!"), Thomas Mitchell (as Pat Garrett), Walter Huston (as Doc Holliday), Mimi Aguglia, and Joe Sawyer. The movie was almost released in 1941, but it was held up for five years due to censorship problems (there are posters and lobby cards from the aborted 1941 release, but they are extremely rare). Howard Hawks began this film as the director, but soon quit the project due to Hughes' constant interference. Hughes also designed the Cantilever bra for this film to better "show off" Russell's chest (who wouldn't wear it!).

Condition: good to very good. there are two small pieces of another poster that were glued on to the front of this poster! One is a roughly 1" x 1" square piece glued over the bottom of Russell's leg on the left side of the poster and the other is a roughly 1" x 2" black piece that was glued over the background in the right border just above the green of Russell's dress. It is very unclear why those pieces were glued there. Looking at the back of the poster, it does not appear there was paper loss in these areas, so maybe they were glued there to cover stains. Certainly a talented restorer could remove the pieces and touch up the areas underneath, if they needed it.

there was a thumbnail sized piece of paper missing in the black background to the left of the "J" of "JANE"; someone put a 1" x 2" piece of paper tape on the back of the poster and colored the front of the tape black, and it works somewhat, but it seems that the tape may have caused the white within the "J" of "JANE" to discolor; there was a 1" tear in the top of the right black border that was repaired in the same way; there were many other tiny tears around the edges of the poster and some have had tape put over them. There were a series of staple holes spread unevenly across the top center of the poster (most in the black background below the tagline, but a few in the edges of Russell's hair); there were also some staple holes in Russell's green dress. Someone did some tiny touch-up to the staple holes, but they are not very noticeable from the front of the poster. This poster is in better condition than the above makes it sound! While it has a large number of small defects, it looks quite nice as it is, and I would think many collectors could happily display it on their wall. Of course, a talented restorer could surely greatly improve the appearance by making the minor defects vanish. Please do not bid on this poster unless you can accept its flaws, or are willing to have them properly restored.
