Date Sold 8/31/2021Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Herald (measures 9" x 12" [23 x 30 cm]; 4 pages) (Learn More) Charlie Chan at Monte Carlo, the 1937 Eugene Forde Monaco Asian detective mystery crime gambling casino thriller ("Based on the character 'Charlie Chan' created by Earl Derr Biggers"; "Original Story by Robert Ellis and Helen Logan") starring Warner Oland (in the title role as Charlie Chan), Keye Luke (as Lee Chan), Virginia Field, Sidney Blackmer, Harold Huber, Kay Linaker, and Robert Kent. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this herald! This is one of an excellent collection of 27 rare heralds from the late 1930s and early 1940s which was recently discovered. Many of them are ones we have either never auctioned before or only auctioned once or twice. The heralds were all printed in the U.S., but were mostly used in theaters in Egypt, so most have overprinting on the back for an Egyptian movie theater. Also, almost all of the heralds have either tiny circular holes scattered in the image (sometimes very few, sometimes more), and some of them have larger paper loss somewhere in the image. We strongly suggest you look closely at our images of the fronts and backs of these rare heralds before bidding on them, so you can see the location of the tiny circular holes or larger paper loss. Condition: good. There are six tiny circular holes and three small areas of paper loss scattered in the herald. See above for more about the condition of this herald and please look at our super-sized images of both sides before bidding. Learn More about condition grades
