An Original Vintage Tri-Folded Magic Show Poster (measures 81" x 107" [206 x 272 cm]) (Learn More) Carter the Great (born Charles Joseph Carter) was a stage magician from the 1890s to 1936. He began his career as a journalist and lawyer, but eventually transitioned to magic. Due to stiff competition from the number of magic acts on the American stages at the time, Carter opted to pursue his career abroad, where he achieved his greatest fame. Among the highlights of Carter's stage performances during his career were the classic "sawing a woman in half" illusion (an elaborate surgical-themed version with "nurses" in attendance), making a live elephant disappear and "cheating the gallows", where a shrouded Carter would vanish, just as he dropped at the end of a hangman's noose. Carter died while on tour in India in 1936, and a highly fictionalized account of his life can be found in the 2001 book Carter Beats the Devil, by Glen David Gold. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this very large (81" x 107") magic poster is extremely rare. We have never auctioned it before! This poster was tri-folded only (which means there is one less machine fold than usual). This means the poster has a significantly lesser number of folds overall than with the same poster that was folded in the "regular" way, which is nice, but it means that it needs to be sent in an oversized flat package, which measures roughly 15" x 30", so it will cost more to send than if it were folded in the regular way, especially if it is sent to a non-U.S. address. Condition: very good to fine. The poster has some small tears and tiny paper loss on very small parts of the borders and folds, but is overall in really nice condition!
