An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Title Lobby Card (LC TC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Charlie Chan in Paris, the 1935 Lewis Seiler France Asian detective mystery crime thriller (based on the characters by Earl Derr Biggers) starring Warner Oland (in the title role as Charlie Chan), Mary Brian, Thomas Beck, Erik Rhodes, Keye Luke, Dorothy Appleby, John Miljan, and Henry Kolker. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that posters from this specific Charlie Chan movie have always been incredibly rare. For some reason, several window cards survive, and also several Australian daybills, but we have auctioned no other posters. We have also never previously auctioned this title card! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Condition: good. Someone once partially folded the card across the middle, and there are many light creases across that area. There are pinholes around the edges and creases scattered in the top half of the card. There are some scuffs scattered throughout the card, with a scuff mark running through Oland's face just below his eyes and extending to the left and right of that. There is water staining on the back of the left of the bottom border, but it does not show through to the front. Someone many years ago took a blue pen and performed touch up to the fold, to make the slight surface paper loss on that fold less noticeable, but otherwise, no restoration has been performed. In spite of these many defects, I would think many collectors could display this incredibly rare card as it is, or certainly, restoration could be performed, but please look at our super-sized images carefully before placing a bid on it.
