An Original 1946 (from the first release of this movie in Italy) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Italian One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27 1/4" x 39 1/4" [69 x 100 cm]) (Learn More)

Old Acquaintance, the 1943 Vincent Sherman romantic love triangle best friends melodrama ("'I know what every woman expects from love ... And What She Accepts If She Is Wise!'"; "There are certain things one just doesn't do! But I Did"; "From the Stage Play by John Van Druten"; about a pair of female childhood best friends who help each other professionally, but after a long time, one of the husbands chases after the other woman, causing much tension in their relationship) starring Bette Davis, Miriam Hopkins, Gig Young, John Loder, Dolores Moran, Philip Reed, and Roscoe Karns. Note that this movie was re-made in 1981 as "Rich and Famous". Note that Gig Young had started making movies in 1940 under his given name of "Byron Barr", but he had little success and was mostly uncredited. In 1942, he played a character called "Gig Young" in "The Gay Sisters", and he changed his name to his character's name, and he started having much greater success, playing young romantic leads (and over the next couple of decades, he continued to play romantic parts, often lecherous older men!).

Artist: Luigi Martinati
Important Added Info: Note that this is an incredibly rare Italian one-sheet from 1946! We know it dates from then, because it has the "20th anniversary of talking pictures" logo, which Warner Bros. used only in 1946 (plus, we know the movie opened in France in 1946, so it makes perfect sense it also opened in Italy at that time). Movie posters of any kind from Italy from during or directly after World War II are incredibly rare (because of all the paper shortages and poverty there at that time). We have never seen this poster at auction (we found a reference image on the Internet, but it was not of a poster for sale).

Note that it is difficult to accurately date Italian posters, and some unmarked re-release posters can be extremely difficult to distinguish from first releases, so please bear that in mind before you place a bid. We used our best information to date this poster, but we can't always guarantee that the Italian posters we sell are not from an unmarked re-release, but this will only prove to be true in a very tiny number of cases.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair to good. The poster had a horizontal strip cut out that measured slightly over 1" x 9". It fell in the upper left of the art in Davis' forehead, and included part of the top of her left eyebrow and a little bit of the left end of the right eyebrow. There was also a 1 1/2" x 3" area of paper cut out of the left border to the left of that paper loss. There was another area of paper cut out of the upper right border. It too measured slightly over 1" wide, but it was done on a semi-circle, extending down into the man's hair from the right border. There was also an irregularly shaped area of paper loss cut out of the bottom left, directly above the title, extending into the top of "Miriam". There was a 1" x 3" rectangle cut out of the middle right of the image, 2" to the right of the woman's arm, plus a rectangle of paper loss in the center of the top border. Finally, there were three areas of paper cut out of the right of the bottom border, mostly blank white paper, but affecting the "os" of "Bros". See our super-sized image for the exact locations of these cut out areas. Other than these cut-outs, the poster had pretty minor wear on the foldlines. It had pinholes and stains around the edges, and some dot stains scattered in the bottom quarter of the poster. Overall, the poster was in fair condition prior to linenbacking. Given the significant paper loss described above, I think the person who did the linenbacking did a pretty good job, and I would think that many people could display this as it is. But if I owned this poster, I would certainly give it to the very top restorer, and have them redo the restoration, and afterwards, it would display fantastically!
