Van Dyke (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) California historical romantic melodrama ("They were born to fall in love!"; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; it included a recreation of the famous San Francisco earthquake and fire!) starring Clark Gable, Jeanette MacDonald (billed as "Together for the first time in San Francisco"), Spencer Tracy (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film), Jack Holt, Ted Healy (most famous as the person who started The Three Stooges; they were first billed as "Ted Healy and his Stooges"; he let them go on their own, hiring replacement "Stooges", but that did not work out well at all!), Margaret Irving, and Jessie Ralph NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that the lobby cards say "AN METRO-GOLDWYN-MAYER MASTERPIECE REPRINT" in the bottom right. This was a terminology used by MGM at this time for some re-releases, and it has caused some collectors to be confused! These lobby cards are original cards from the 1948 re-release of this movie, and are NOT a "reprint"! Condition: good. The two cards at left were used in Australia and they have an Australian rating stenciled in the bottom left corner. They also have the words "AN MGM SILVER ANNIVERSARY PICTURE" stenciled in the top center of each card (I have seen this on several other 1949 MGM lobby cards, including those from the 1949 re-release of "The Wizard of Oz"). It was likely done by the studio, and some people might consider it a defect, and some might consider it a cool addition to each card! Those cards also have slight discoloration scattered in various areas due to exposure to moisture. The other card has a penciled "X" across Tracy's image and someone once attempted to erase that mark.
