An Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10 1/4" [20 x 26 cm] Movie Still (Learn More)

Smart Money, the 1931 Alfred E. Green professional gambling poker playing crime melodrama ("The picture you've been waiting for"; about a Greek barber who has a remarkable talent playing poker, and that lets him achieve great success gambling illegally, but pretty women are his downfall) starring Edward G. Robinson, James Cagney, Evalyn Knapp, Ralf Harolde, Noel Francis, Margaret Livingston, George Reed, and John Larkin (Reed and Larkin played train porters). Sadly, this movie was the only time these two legendary actors (Robinson and Cagney) appeared together in a movie, even though they spent a large part of their career at the same studio, Warner Bros.! Perhaps Warner Bros. thought they were such major stars that they shouldn't be in the same movie, or maybe there were "ego" issues on the part of either or both stars (I wonder who would have been top billed!). Also, note that this was Edward G. Robinson's very first movie after "Little Caesar", and James Cagney's second movie after "Public Enemy", and it is quite likely that this was in production before either or both movies were released, so neither star may not have yet achieved stardom while this movie was being made.
NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography.

Condition: good. There is a tiny black dot ink stain below one of Robinson's eyebrows. The still was used in a newspaper or magazine, and there are red printer instructions in the borders, as well as some creases, smudges, and scuffs around the edges, with paper loss in three blank corners.
