An Original Vintage Linenbacked Circus Poster (measures 25" x 39 1/4" [64 x 100 cm]) (Learn More) Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Combined Circus, the 1940s circus poster ("The greatest show on earth"; "Miss Dorothy Herbert World's Most Daring Horsewoman") promoting a show and featuring art of Dorothy Herbert and a horse. If anyone knows more about this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here. The modern version of the circus started in 1919 when the Barnum & Bailey's Greatest Show on Earth, a circus created by P. T. Barnum and James Anthony Bailey, was merged with the Ringling Bros. World's Greatest Shows. With weakening attendance and high operating costs, the circus closed on May 21st, 2017 after 146 years. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had two lines of darkening across the middle of the image, both running through the girl's face and hair, and they appear to have been printing defects. There was a tear in the red background to the right of the horse's snout, and some small tears in parts of the top and bottom borders. The right edge was trimmed unevenly, but only solid red paper was affected. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. Learn More about condition grades
