An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Herald (measures 6" x 6 3/4" [15 x 17 cm]; 4 pages) (Learn More) Strange Cargo, the 1940 Frank Borzage South America Devil's Island escaped convict romantic crime melodrama ("Flight of the damned -- as a sin ship rides the waves!"; "Based on the book 'Not Too Narrow Not Too Deep' by Richard Sale"; about a prisoner on Devil's Island who tries to escape, but is turned in by a pretty saloon girl, and he tries to escape a second time with a group of men by boat, and one of them is a strange Christ-like figure who seems to know what is going to happen before it does) starring Clark Gable ("Clark Gable's Greatest Adventure!"), Joan Crawford ("Joan Crawford's Boldest Romance!"), Ian Hunter, Peter Lorre, Paul Lukas, Albert Dekker, J. Edward Bromberg, Eduardo Ciannelli, and Charles Judels. Note that this movie was partially filmed in the studio, and partially "on location", but Pismo Beach, California stood in for Devil's Island! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this herald! This is one of a collection of 16 rare heralds from the late 1930s and early 1940s (in 16 separate auctions). Many of them are ones we have either never auctioned before or only auctioned once or twice. The heralds were all printed in the U.S., but were mostly used in theaters in Egypt, so most have overprinting on the back for an Egyptian movie theater. Also, almost all of the heralds have tiny circular holes scattered in the image (sometimes very few, sometimes more). We strongly suggest you look closely at our images of the fronts and backs of these rare heralds before bidding on them, so you can see the location of the tiny circular holes or larger paper loss. We previously auctioned 27 heralds from this same collection, and all but four of them sold for over $20 each, and three sold for over $100 each, with one selling for $700! Condition: good. There are around ten tiny circular holes scattered in the herald. See above for more about the condition of this herald and please look at our super-sized images of both sides before bidding.
