Artist: James Montgomery Flagg
Important Added Info: Note that we previously auctioned this poster on a thin linen backing in 2016. The person who purchased it from us (for $417) had it removed from the thin linen and linenbacked and has re-consigned it to us, so it is still the only example of this poster we have ever auctioned!

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster was originally mounted onto a thin linen with no excess (this was almost surely done soon after it was created). There was an area of water staining in the top left that affected the bottom of the "P", and water staining in the center of the top border. There were some water stains in the middle left, entering the top of the wrench. There were smudges scattered in all the white background areas and in the letters of the title. There were tiny tears around the edges, with creases and tears in the bottom title area, with tiny paper loss. Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to linenbacking. As noted above, we previously auctioned this poster in the above condition, and the person who purchased it sent it to a restorer, who removed the old linen and then re-backed it. They did it in a "minimalist" fashion, more for conservation than for restoration purposes. To "restore" away all of the above defects would have required putting much paint all over the poster, so instead, they left most of the creases and the faint smudges that did not come out through light bleaching. You can clearly see most of the above defects and some of the restoration when you look at the poster close up, but from any reasonable viewing distance, the defects become much less noticeable (and of course, those defects reinforce that this is a very rare original vintage poster and not any sort of reproduction.
